An insurer yesterday launched the UK's first policy to cover your home against invasion by squirrels, wasps or mice.

Internet insurer Esure's pest cover offers insurance against the five most common household pests: grey squirrels, wasps, hornets, rats and mice.

The group said one in three people had had a problem with pests in their home in the past, with many people not knowing how to go about getting rid of them.

It said eradicating rats cost between £95 and £150, while getting rid of a hornets' or wasps' nest was likely to set you back by up to £100.

At the same time many pests could also cause structural damage to a property or even destroy possessions. The new policy, which is available as an add-on to Esure's home insurance, costs from just £1.50 a month.

It offers access to a 24-hour helpline to report the problem and get advice, a qualified pest specialist who will come out and deal with the pests, and advice on how to avoid future infestations.

Dr Peter Cottee, Esure's pest expert, said: "Pests in the home can cause structural damage, damage to home contents, and health problems to occupants through the diseases they carry and the allergic responses they can trigger such as asthma and eczema if left unchecked.

"Pests can also cause fear in the home with wasp stings responsible for anaphylactic shock in some people.

"During the winter months mice are looking for ways to escape from the cold and nest indoors, so homeowners should be extra vigilant and not delay in seeking professional advice if they notice any tell-tale signs such as gnawed wires, droppings or scampering sounds coming from the attic."
