Mobile network operator TMobile UK attracted another 93,000 subscribers to its customer base during the first half of the year - taking the total figure to 16.1 million.

The subscriber figures include 4.1 million customers from Virgin Mobile Holdings, which runs its virtual network on T-Mobile's infrastructure.

Last month Virgin Mobile said it had added 77,000 new active subscribers in the second quarter of 2005.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile UK, one of the three arms of German group Deutsche Telekom, yesterday posted strong second quarter results, with earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITA) up from £192 million last year to £222 million.

Total revenue for the quarter came in at £687 million.

T-Mobile said that the blended average revenue per user rose to £19 per month in the first half, up from £18 previously, adding that ARPU growth was particularly noticeable among contract customers.

This year to date, T-Mobile UK has launched two major new services; U-Fix for contract customers, unveiled on April 1, and Mates Rates for pre-pay customers.

U-Fix enables customers to fix their monthly mobile bills with set levels of talk time and text messages and a fixed monthly bill.

Take-up has been strong, already attracting over 100,000 new customers and customers switching from contract to pre-pay

Meanwhile, Mates Rates offers a simple, low cost solution for pre-pay customers talking to their friends on TMobile, with national on net 5p per minute call rates, and 5p per text rates - all day, and everyday.

This autumn T-Mobile will be adding to these initiatives with a major launch of further mobile internet services.

Brian McBride, managing director of T-Mobile UK, said: "In the highly competitive UK market, we are increasing our focus on quality customers and on developing services and tariffs which meet our customers' needs and do so with simplicity and good value, without the clutter of small print so prevalent in the marketplace."

"Mates Rates is for the millions of pre-pay customers, particularly the young, who call and text frequently between themselves.

"With 5p a text and a 5p call cost, they can now afford to do so anytime - without worries. Mates Rates is outstanding pre-pay value, it's very simple and we'll be giving it heavyweight promotion.

"The results of our actions on tariffs, services, distribution and our new style advertising show in our strong EBITDA and margins, and in the up-lift in average customer spend, despite the effects of last September's termination rate cuts."
