A student who helped quadruple sales of a pharmaceutical firm's products and another whose work cut the number of train cancellations have been showing off their projects.

Gap year students and undergraduates from Birmingham University produced the results of their 12-month placements at a special event yesterday.

Around 70 students took part in The Year in Industry Company Exhibition.

Among the exhibitors were Stephen Burgess, aged 19, from Sutton Cold-field who generated £170,000 in extra sales for Rhodia in Oldbury after working on purification of a product used in pharmaceutical production.

Tom Churchman, also aged 19, from Northfield, showed how his work at Central Trains reduced the number of train cancellations caused by accidental activation of the emergency brakes.

Since his modifications was introduced the average number of failures per month has dropped from 1.75 to 0.4.

Also at the show was 22-year-old Gurpreet Sanghera, from Wolverhampton, who created a new data system for Orange/Tuner & Townsend.

It produces monthly reports for contractors showing performance and the work undertaken, saving time and money.
