Job satisfaction is getting worse with fewer than two-thirds of workers happy with their lot.

A poll of 1,100 employees showed that job satisfaction had slumped by ten per cent in the past three years.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting said its study also found that just 59 per cent of workers felt a strong sense of commitment to their organisation, a five per cent decline since 2002.

Spokesman Dr Patrick Gilbert said: "With more opportunities available, people often think the grass is greener elsewhere. When employment opportunities are limited, employees tend to have lower expectations and feel more satisfied with their jobs."

Just six in ten employees are proud to work for their organisation while only 65 per cent believe they have a long-term future with their current employer.

Fewer than half those questioned said they felt encouraged to suggest better ways of doing things at work.

"Employees are closest to operational issues and customer concerns and can provide timely information on how to improve business performance."
