With only eight weeks left until the St Basils’ Great Walk, the charity reports that places are filling up fast as teams from some of the region’s top companies rush to get their registration forms in before the May 8 closing date.

The annual walk, on Saturday, May 30, sees teams trekking across the Brecon Beacons in Wales.

The course is split into two routes, a 14-mile walk and a 28-mile walk. So far, 45 teams have signed up, setting this year’s event on course to smash previous attendance records.

Last year more than 650 people from more than 140 teams walked a total of 14,210 miles, raising in excess of £70,000.

The money raised supports St Basils housing facilities in and around Birmingham, Solihull and Redditch. The charity has been working with young people between the ages of 16 and 25 for more than 35 years and last year housed more than 1,000 young people and provided advice and support to a further 4,000.

This year, each team to enter the walk will go into a prize draw for a day’s free paintballing for up to 16 people.

Companies that have already signed up for the challenge include Cadburys, Anthony Collins Solicitors, Barclays, BHSF, Deloitte, John Lewis, Taylor Wimpy, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and HFC Bank.

Simeon Ling, of Anthony Collins Solicitors, said: “Our firm has been putting teams into this event every year since it started 12 years ago. It’s a great day out and a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a local charity, whilst networking with other companies and team building. We wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
