Kidderminster Carolians RFC Under-17s are celebrating their league-winning season with an Easter tour to Portugal.

The team had originally planned to visit South Africa, but were forced to change their plans due to the fall in the value of the pound.

Instead, the 20-strong squad will play two matches over five days in Portugal - where the game is developing fast.

The team’s leading corporate sponsor MFG Solicitors, also the club’s solicitors, has continued to help with travel and equipment costs and providing items of kit. A party of 20 players and seven parents, plus team mascot 13-year-old Charlie Hopkirk, will travel to Portugal. The U17s won the North Midlands League III this season and despite injury problems managed to win most of their matches.

MFG chairman Maynard Burton, whose son Hugo plays in the team, said: “It’s a key part of our firm’s commitment to the local community to support initiatives like foreign tours.

He also received a cheque for £500 for the Wooden Spoon charity, which helps disadvantaged young people, raised by the club during the season.
