A Shropshire tile maker will represent the best of British manufacturing at the Science Museum during the London Olympics.

The Green Roof Tile Company has been selected to take part in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills’ Make it in Great Britain exhibition in South Kensington, aimed at challenging outdated perceptions and transforming the image of modern manufacturing.

The Telford based firm, in collaboration with the Caparo Innovation Centre at the University of Wolverhampton, designs and makes Envirotile, a recycled polymer roofing system that offers unrivalled technical performance with excellent eco-credentials.

Having beaten competition from hundreds of UK companies, the company will showcase its latest products and educate visitors about the value of manufacturing to British business.

Professor Andrew Pollard from the University of Wolverhampton said: “The exhibition will showcase the most innovative aspects of British manufacturing at a time when the eyes of the world will be on London.

“Envirotile will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with exhibitions from companies such as Airbus, Jaguar Land Rover, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, GKN and Mars.

“Envirotile is a British product from concept through to manufacture and it represents all that is good about British ingenuity and showcases the way in which the private sector and academia can collaborate to produce world leading products.”

Business Minister Mark Prisk said: “Manufacturing accounts for eight per cent of total UK employment and well over half of export goods, yet current perceptions of the industry are out of date and do not reflect that reality.”

Ian Blatchford, director of the Science Museum added: “We hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition and see at first-hand how innovation in British manufacturing is still thriving today.”

The exhibition will be open from July 24 to September 9 and is free to visit.
