Solihull-based support services firm SG Maintenance Services is the December winner of the Birmingham Post Business Award.

Operations director Terry Smith received the award from the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Coun Randal Brew (Con Northfield) yesterday during a presentation held at Birmingham Council House.

SG Maintenance was recognised after landing a £3 million contract haul in just eight months, putting it on course for the best period in its 68-year history.

The building maintenance specialist offers mechanical and electrical maintenance, retail refrigeration services and installations.

The latest contract wins are with Iceland, Marks & Spencer and Craegmoor Healthcare, while the company also has a long-term contract with Sainsbury's looking after 50 per cent of the retailer's store portfolio - 330 outlets for North London to the north of Scotland.

Mr Smith said: "The retail sector is very competitive and so to win these contracts is a real feather in the company's cap.

"The deal with Iceland will see us maintaining air conditioning at the group's 120-store network."

Other large blue-chip clients include Woolworths and Boots while in the leisure sector the company serves firms such as Mitchells & Butlers and the Spirit pub group.

In the defence sector, the company works in conjunction with Wolverhampton-based Carillion, supplying a range of electrical and mechanical services.

It has worked at RAF Cosford, RAF Valley and MoD Donnington, plus the barracks at Colchester, which is undergoing a major transformation.

With an eye to the future, Mr Smith said the firm was now looking at servicing the Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire.

"We are looking to supply mechanical and electrical servicing to the Royal Engineers there," said Mr Smith.

In addition to this, the firm undertakes work in specialist sectors such as art galleries, where one of its clients is Compton Verney.

"It is a complex sector. We have to provide evidence of precise temperature and humidity levels before they will allow valuable works of art to be displayed," said Mr Smith.

With the pipeline of work taken into consideration, Mr Smith said he was confident that the firm would turn over in excess of £16 million this year.

Originally set up as a plumbing operation in 1939, SG Maintenance's growth started in the early eighties when the company moved into central heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

By 1995 it was turning over just under £5 million and employing about 50 staff and in the 12 years since then it has tripled turnover and created nearly 200 jobs.

"Although based in the Midlands, we operate across the country due to the nature of our contracts," said Mr Smith.
