Support services specialist Serco - which earlier this year acquired Birmingham technology firm ITNet in a deal valued at £235 million - yesterday said it expected first half results to be line with expectations.

In an upbeat pre-close trading statement, the group told shareholders it had notched up significant growth, both organically and from recent acquisitions.

"Overall, market conditions for the group are favourable.

"We remain confident of our ability to deliver strong and profitable growth, both this year and for the foreseeable future," the company said.

Serco said the phasing- in of the Northern Rail franchise was proceeding well and the franchise had showed a strong operational performance in the first half.

It also said ITNet, which has been rebranded Serco Solutions after its acquisition in February, had performed in line with forecasts.

It added: "While, as anticipated, Serco Solutions' first half revenue will be below that for the corresponding period last year, we are continuing to receive positive responses from customers and are seeing more organic growth opportunities as a result."
