Online retailer Mobile Fun Group is expecting December to be its hottest month to date, with ex-VAT sales exceeding £1 million.

The Birmingham-based firm, which ships to 21 European countries saw sales rise by 15 per cent in the last financial year, to £7 million, and has been boosted by launching four new sites.

Founder Anthony Cook said the company has been boosted by a new service targeting businesses.

He added: “December is a fantastic end to our 10th year. In the space of 12 months, we have launched four new websites, both in the UK and Europe, initiated our Corporate Advantage offering for businesses, and taken on a new business development manager to lead our growth into new markets.”

Mobile Fun sells mobile phone accessories and handsets to consumers and businesses while its sister website, GearZap.com, offers iPad, netbook and laptop accessories.

The firm has also launched a new gaming accessories website, GamingZap.com.

Managing director Mohammed Hussain added: “At our current rate of growth, and with savvy buyers stocking up on their Christmas wish list of accessories and devices before VAT rises to 20 per cent in January, we expect to end 2010 on a high note.”

Mobile Fun celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and has grown steadily from its origins in Anthony Cook’s spare bedroom in 2000 to being a successful online retailer currently employing 44 staff at its head office in Saltley.

Orders have increased by at least 40 per cent in every month this year and the firm has seen staffing figures jump from 37 at the end of 2009 to 49, including staff in France and Germany.

The improvement in fortunes also helped the company back into profit. It recorded a pre-tax profit of more than £500,000 for the year to March 31, compared to a loss of £17,000 in 2009.

Export sales are part of the firm’s growth plans, and it has recently created a French website after its German site, MobileFun.de, was launched in 2008.
