A supermarket chain has submitted a planning application for a 30,000 sq ft store on a former engineering factory site in north Birmingham which could create around 200 jobs.

Sainsbury’s hopes to redevelop the former GKN factory site in Old Walsall Road, Hamstead, into a foodstore and six non-retail business units with more than 300 car parking spaces.

The scheme includes a new roundabout on Old Walsall Road, a pedestrian crossing and bus stops on each side of the street may be moved.

The proposals have been submitted to Birmingham City Council following a public consultation, which started in June 2012.

Sainsbury’s claims the scheme has been strongly supported by local people, with respondents calling for a greater shopping offer.

Regional development manager Ben Littman said: “We have now submitted our planning application to the council and look forward to it being brought before the planning committee in due course.”
