Stephen Reilly, finance director for Birmingham-based Severn Trent Water, is taking on an extra role when he wades in to become chairman of the company's fundraising committee for the charity WaterAid.

Mr Reilly aims to continue the success of the committee, which raised a staggering £237,000 last year for WaterAid.

He said: "The work WaterAid does to help provide clean water in some of the world's poorest areas is absolutely vital. The £237,000 raised by employees plus a further £122,000 donated by Severn Trent customers from last year's annual appeal, is enough to change the lives of thousands of people and will pay for clean water, sanitation systems and hygiene education programmes."

He added: "We do tend to take our water for granted in this country and we expect water to be on tap 24 hours a day. Yet thousands of people in developing areas of the world face a daily struggle to find water and carry it home.

"That's why I'm determined to build on the efforts of our staff and raise as much money as we can to really make a difference."
