One of Birmingham’s most famous shopping arcades is now opening seven days a week.

Hortons’ Piccadilly Arcade, built in the mid-19th century, had not traded on Sundays or Bank Holidays since being acquired by the family firm in the 1970s.

Chief executive Rob Blyth pointed out that there was never the demand to open on such days, but now it is great to see the increased activity.

However, Mr Blyth says the arrival of Cotswold Outdoor on two upper floors has increased activity in the arcade and stimulated other trade retailers to open on these additional days.

“Cotswold has had a tremendous impact, adding variety and thus attracting customers looking for something different to big brand chain stores.

“Fellow Arcade retailers have followed suit by opening on Sundays, and have subsequently seen the benefits,” he said.

The arcade has now just a single vacant unit, and an agreement to fill that space is in solicitors’ hands.
