Waterstone's owner HMV ditched the Ottakar's name yesterday as it outlined plans to close "a handful" of bookshops following its takeover of the chain.
There are 32 places where Waterstone's and Ottakar's overlap and HMV said it will operate "from one bookstore only in a handful of these locations".
The acquisition was the subject of a Competition Commision inquiry which identified the overlapping areas, including stores less than a quarter of a mile from each other in Coventry, Cheltenham and Stafford.
A spokeswoman said it was too soon to see where any closures may be made.
HMV also said it will close Ottakar's office in Salisbury and two in London as it moved all administrative work to the Waterstone's head office.
The firm said it was in talks with Ottakar's staff over the integration - which will see Ottakar's renamed Waterstone's - but did not say how many jobs will go.
If follows the #62.9 million takeover completion.
