Independent newsagents are closing at a rate of more than one a day, new statistics show.

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents, which represents small, independent shops, said 510 of its members went bankrupt last year as they struggled to compete with supermarkets.

The group is lobbying the Office of Fair Trading for an investigation into competition in the publishing and distribution industry.
