Bosses at the NEC have been giving themselves a pat on the back after successfully hosting the biggest ever BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

More than 13,000 guests braved the snow and Arctic weather to attend the event at the LG Arena on Sunday which was won by champion jockey AP McCoy.

Phil Mead, MD of Arenas, part of the NEC Group said: “We were delighted to be hosting such a prestigious event once again, and I’m thrilled it’s been such a success, not only for us, but for the visitors, our sports heroes, the BBC and also Birmingham, bringing a welcomed economic boost to the area.

“It’s been an amazing year of sport and we send our congratulations to Tony McCoy and the great efforts from each and every sports personality involved.”

The NEC site has now hosted the awards three out of the five times it’s been outside of London.
