The deadline is fast approaching for entrants wanting to know their fate in the Midlands Media Awards.

Judging is now complete in the 2006 competition.

A huge number of journalists and publications have had their work assessed by leading industry members in the annual competition organised by Birmingham Press Club.

The results will be announced at Birmingham's Botanical Gardens on October 12.

This year, due to the huge number of entries, a separate panel, made up of former Post and Mail photographer and Birmingham Press Club director Tony Flanagan, and Brian Bould of The Daily Mail, judged the photographic categories.

Andrew Pierce, assistant editor of The Times, chaired the panel for the main judging day.

Other members of the panel were Business Finance Midlands editor and press Club deputy chairman Fred Bromwich, broadcaster Ed James, of 100.7 Heart FM, and Tony Flanagan.

The main panel also reviewed the photographic winners, and declared that overall, standards for all categories were of the highest order.

The Birmingham Post is battling it out to be named as Newspaper of the Year with ten Birmingham Post journalists and photographers competing in a range of categories including Scoop of the Year, Feature writer of Year, Business journalist of the Year and News Reporter of the Year.

Other titles hoping for glory include the Birmingham Post's sister papers the Birmingham Mail and Sunday Mercury with others across the region - from the Leicester Mercury to Worcester News and Gloucestershire Echo - all hoping for glory for their titles and representatives.

Mr Pierce said: "As we found last year, the standard of journalism in the Midlands region is of the highest quality.

"We have some very talented journalists in this region, working for newspapers, radio and television.

"The photography category was of an exceptionally high standard this year - outstanding, in fact.

"What struck me overall is how much creative journalism there is in the Midlands, which is a region which has so many of the country[0131]s smaller publications - but they are certainly able to stand their ground and challenge the big boys," he said.

Press Club chairman John Lamb described the event as the premier media awards in the Midlands.

He said: "The picture category was particularly strong and this follows our experience in previous years." Candidates at this year's awards were judged in 13 categories.

The event, now in their fourth year, have been moved from Spring to Autumn for 2006, in order to avoid clashes with other award schemes taking place in the city.

Comperes for the awards swill be ITV Central presenter and Press Club vice-president Bob Warman, and Ed James.

The organisers are still seeking sponsorship for a number categories. Overall Press Club sponsor Royal Mail is the event's main sponsor. Other sponsors so far include Network Rail, South Birmingham College and British Airways.
