Confectionery giant Mars is to axe 700 jobs in the UK as part of plans to restructure its business, the company announced yesterday.

Most of the jobs will be cut at the firm's main factory in Slough, Berkshire, although other centres will be hit.

Owners Masterfoods said it was reducing its workforce by over 1,000 across Europe, with jobs also being lost in France and Germany.

About 500 jobs will be cut in Slough at the site's two factories and offices, and a further 200 posts will go at the firm's five other plants in Leicestershire, Peterborough, Kings Lynn and Leeds. The jobs will go by the end of the year.
