Marcos Engineering has unveiled its new 185 mph GT2 grand tourer which it claims harks back to the halycon days of British racing.

The company, which employs 15 people at its testing facility in Warwickshire, unveiled the £50,000 car at the Motorexpo in Canary Wharf this week.

The design team said it was driven to capture styling cues from Marcos' 45-year British motorsport heritage, including's Sir Jackie Stewart's first win in 1961 - in the Marcos Gullwing coupe.

A spokesman for Marcos said: "This is modelled on the numerous finishes at LeMans and the 1990s British GT championship race car - the famed LM600.

"This design effort has produced a distinctly British sports car with classic lines and a stunning exhaust note."

The car can accelerate to 60mph in four seconds and to 100 mph in nine seconds with a top speed of 185 mph.

Driving agility and road holding have been achieved through extensive chassis development under a partnership with Prodrive - a worldwide leader in chassis dynamics, vehicle dynamic systems and powertrains.

Prodrive, which is based on the same site as Marcos, has six World Rally titles and five British Touring Car Championships to their name.

Marcos set up a 6,000 sq foot development and testing facility last summer as part of a strategic alliance with Prodrive.

Tony Stelliga, chairman of Marcos Engineering, said: "The TSO GT2 marks the return of the race bred Marcos coupe in modern form.

"Our extensive engineering efforts have produced an outstanding grand touring car with excellent track capabilities - and a new price/ performance point in the industry."
