Small and medium sized businesses have been invited to enter The AXA SME of the Year Award for the Midlands, the regional element of the National Business Awards programme dubbed the ' Business Oscars'.

It recognises local firms for their entrepreneurship and innovation in a business climate that is often perceived as being unfriendly towards smaller companies.

The award also seeks to highlight the importance of management excellence in maintaining a successful business.

Mark Cliff, commercial and intermediary lines director, AXA, said: "The AXA SME of the Year Award will identify the Midlands' most innovative and dynamic business. Running a successful company that is both financially and commercially strong requires a solid business strategy and consistent hard work."

Last year the SME ' Business Oscar' was won by Flooring Supplies.co.uk who showed innovation, substantial growth and a strong financial performance.

All entries must be submitted by March 22.

The regional winner will be announced on July 6 and will then be entered into the national competition. The AXA SME of the Year will be crowned at the national ceremony at The Grosvenor Hotel, London, on November 8.
