The Wesleyan Assurance Society of Birmingham has seen off giants such as Legal & General and Scottish Widows to be named Life Insurer of the Year in a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

It is the highest accolade ever won by the mutually-owned Wesleyan which consistently achieves the highest returns for its policyholders.

"This is a real achievement for the Wesleyan and an honour," chief executive Craig Errington said.

"We remain one of the UK’s financially strongest life assurance companies."
