Squire Sanders Hammonds is to boost its corporate team in Birmingham with the appointment of M&A and capital markets expert, Edward Dawes.

Mr Dawes will join Squire Sanders Hammonds in September from Wragge & Co, where he has been a partner in the corporate team for the last 12 years, including previously heading the firm’s equity markets M&A team.

He has considerable experience operating in M&A and equity capital markets, including leading a number of public company takeovers - both recommended and hostile. He is also a member of the London Stock Exchange’s Regional Advisory Group.

Mr Dawes is ranked as a leading corporate/M&A lawyer in the Midlands by Chambers & Partners in its clients guide to the UK legal profession, with market sources commenting that he is “very capable at handling high-value acquisition work”. He will join the three other partners in the Birmingham corporate team, private equity specialist, Peter McLintock, Geoff Perry and Christian Lowis. The Birmingham corporate team was recently ranked fifth by volume of deals completed in the Midlands by corporate finance deals database, Corp Fin.

In the year to date, the team has advised on eight deals worth £500 million in the Midlands and has a number of deals in the pipeline.

Most recently the team advised on the US$110 million sale of Zeus Technology Limited to Riverbed, a NASDAQ-listed corporation based in San Francisco and added Cutts Recycling, a waste recovery business based in Yorkshire to the growing portfolio of such businesses for Spanish-owned international packaging client, SAICA.

Mr Dawes said: “I am excited to be joining Squire Sanders Hammonds and was attracted both by its philosophy and its strong and established international credentials.

“Working with the existing team, several members of which I already know well, having worked with them previously at Wragge & Co, I am looking forward to developing the firm’s corporate profile both in the Midlands market and beyond, as well as to expanding relationships with clients that operate internationally, to give full support on their day-to-day operational requirements and for M&A.”

William Downs, global practice group leader of the corporate department, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Edward to the firm.

“We are looking to grow our well regarded corporate team in Birmingham and Edward will play a pivotal role in developing our services, particularly in the M&A and capital markets arena. We have asked him to head the team and we look forward to his arrival.”
