Law firm Weightmans has boosted its corporate offering by recruiting a team from rival law firm Needham & James.
Gareth Griffiths and Barry Doherty will be joining the firm’s Birmingham office as partners with Melanie Mitulla coming on board as a solicitor.
Gareth has more than 20 years’ experience in corporate law and has worked with public and private companies in a variety of activities from formations and mergers to demergers and dissolutions.
Barry qualified in 1990 and his experience ranges from reorganising and restructuring companies to mergers, acquisitions and disposals. He also worked on high-profile cases including the management buy-out of aerospace engineering company Clamonta.
Melanie Mitulla qualified in Germany in 2006 and joined Needham & James soon after. She has worked on a number of corporate transactions including company acquisitions and MBOs, and has also been a key contact for Needham & James’ German-speaking clients.
John Schorah, director of commercial at Weightmans, said: “Although we are operating in a challenging market we continue to strengthen our corporate offering in the Midlands. This is part of our strategy to establish a strong corporate network across all our regions.
“Our commercial business line has grown considerably in recent years and we continue to widen our offering and expand the team. We achieved a staggering 35 per cent growth in turnover last year and, although market conditions have changed, we remain ambitious – especially in the Midlands.”
Ian Vicary, Weightmans’ head of corporate, added: “Gareth, Barry and Melanie will provide further gravitas to our existing team in Birmingham.
”The focus for 2007 and 2008 has been on investment and expansion and we are now seeing the results in terms of turnover and increased profile in the market.
“Our corporate team is widely recognised in the local business communities for delivering a great value service in an effective and proactive manner.”
Meanwhile, the firm has appointed Jane Hobson as head of the 17-strong Midlands employment team from Ollerenshaw in Leamington Spa and will be based in the Birmingham office.
Ms Hobson specialises in employment law and has particular experience in advising employers on large-scale redundancies, reorganisations and difficult day-to-day employment problems. She regularly devises and presents interactive seminars and training sessions.
Tim Lang, head of employment, said: “We are delighted to have Jane on board. Our team has a well-established client base, including public and private sector clients, and a growing reputation nationally. With a few new panel appointments in the bag we remain ambitious in our plans to grow our market share.”
