The family law team at Colmore Square firm Martineau is running a Saturday service to cope with the credit-crunch induced jump in high-wealth divorces.
While many experts believe the credit crunch is responsible for the lowest UK divorce rate in more than 25 years, with many couples postponing their divorce for lack of funds, the opposite appears to be true among more wealthy couples.
Because of a sharp drop in their personal fortunes, many couples are finding it hard to cope with the drop in lifestyle and relationships are coming under more pressure. The USA has seen a 20 per cent jump in divorce rates among millionaire business owners and the trend is expected to extend across the world as the credit crunch shows no sign of easing.
Mary Kaye, partner and head of the family law team at Martineau, said the firm would be starting Saturday work by the end of the month. She said: “We all know relationships can fail for a variety of reasons, but the stress senior executives and business owners are under at present is increasing the risk of a break up. At this point you need a lawyer you can trust; someone you can talk through all aspects of your life without feeling you are being judged and you need access to them when it won’t disrupt your business.
“The increased pressure on time creates a paradox that is not lost on many of our clients. The very reason they face difficulty in their personal life is the very same reason many find it hard to sort out their personal affairs during the working week. So the obvious course of action is to provide access to the best legal advice when it is most convenient for them.”
Mary has experience in international family law, attracting clients from Hong Kong, Guernsey, South Africa and the Czech Republic, which includes court proceedings falling outside of UK jurisdiction. She regularly deals with ancillary relief clients whose financial assets are worth in excess of £10,000,000.
The Family Law Team at Martineau offers a full range of legal services dealing with all issues relating to marriage, its breakdown, separation and divorce, residence, adoption and child abduction and often involves legal and financial disputes in different jurisdictions. The Family Law Team is part of Martineau’s highly rated private capital group which is ranked in the top tier of the Legal 500.
