More than 250 UK staff at international law firm DLA Piper have been put in consultation as redundancies continue to loom large in the legal sector.

The firm has announced it is considering closing its Glasgow office, its defendant insurance practice and bringing its document production unit together under one roof following a review of UK operations.

A total of 11 staff at the firm’s document production unit in Birmingham will be affected and 251 staff across the UK.

The news comes after rival Pinsent Masons announced redundancies in the past week – only four months after revealing more job losses.

A DLA Piper spokesperson said: "Following a comprehensive review of our UK business designed to ensure that we are operating in a manner, in the locations, and across the practice areas that support both our strategic objectives and the needs of our clients, we have begun a period of consultation in the UK that will consider the possible closure of our Glasgow office, the closure or divestment of our defendant insurance practice and the consolidation into one location of our current multi-site document production unit."

A breakdown released by DLA Piper revealed the consultation exercise would put 116 jobs at risk in document production, plus 85 employees in Glasgow and a further 50 in defendant insurance, totalling 227 full-time equivalent jobs.

The firm said consultation would begin on November 28 and run until early 2013. The prospect of staff transfers to Edinburgh was raised, with job opportunities also available in Leeds as a result of the process in the document production unit.
