The managing partner of one of the city’s largest law firms has announced he is not seeking re-election to the role.
Michael Shaw said he will remain with Cobbetts LLP but is stepping aside after 16 years at the firm which had been looking to merge with DWF earlier this year but the deal was called off because of ongoing market conditions.
Under his leadership, Cobbetts has grown from a solitary Manchester base to sites in three leading regional cities including Birmingham - which is headed up by Graham Muth - and London. Headcount during his tenure has risen from 175 to 750.
Mr Shaw guided Cobbetts through the mergers with Read Hind Stewart of Leeds in 2002 and with Birmingham-based Lee Crowder in 2004. He also opened the firm’s London office in 2007 after partners switched from Wedlake Bell, and established Cobbetts International as the firm increased its penetration of global markets..
Stephen Benson, senior partner and chairman of Cobbetts, said: “During his successful time as managing partner, Michael has helped transform Cobbetts with a clear vision and market focus.
“He has worked tirelessly to help create one of the country’s leading law firms through a combination of mergers and organic growth. He has also built up astrong corporate culture based on values.
“Michael steps down as managing partner knowing he is held in the highest regard by all staff. I am delighted he will remain as a consultant to Cobbetts as we press ahead with our plans for future growth.”
Mr Shaw added: “I am immensely proud to have served as Cobbetts’ managing partner for 16 years. I’ve always felt privileged to work with fantastic staff across our four offices.
“However, the time now feels right to hand over the reins as the firm begins a new era, and so I will not be seeking re-election to the role. I would like to extend my thanks to all staff and clients for making the job so enjoyable.”
