England rugby legend Brian Moore will be the guest speaker at this year’s Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards.

The England hooker, who made 64 test appearances for his country during his eight-year playing career, will join more than 500 guests at the event on March 19 at the International Convention Centre.

During his rugby career Mr Moore had a fearsome reputation as one of the hardest players of the amateur era, earning him the nickname ‘Pitbull’.

He played his club rugby for Harlequins, Leeds, Richmond and Nottingham, and made his test debut for England against Scotland at Twickenham in 1987.

He went on to win three Grand Slams with England and played at the first three Rugby World Cups, including the 1991 final in which England narrowly lost to Australia.

Mr Moore also made five test appearances for the British & Irish Lions between 1989 and 1993.

Although best known for his career on the rugby pitch, Mr Moore, who was born in Birmingham, is also a qualified solicitor and was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Nottingham in 2010.

Today he is a respected television pundit and commentator for the BBC, as well as a regular sports columnist for the Daily Telegraph. He also hosts his own rugby show, Full Contact, on TalkSport.

Eileen Schofield, president of Birmingham Law Society, said: “We’re really excited to have Brian as this year’s guest speaker. He has had an illustrious playing career, at both club and international level, and continues to share his love of the sport as an impassioned and forthright television commentator and radio broadcaster.

“Having Brian as the speaker is especially fitting, not only as the Rugby World Cup is being hosted in England this year, but also because he’s a qualified solicitor, so he will be in good company.”

Now in its 14th year, the Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and firms over the past 12 months.

Joshua Rozenberg, lawyer, legal commentator and host of BBC Radio 4’s Law in Action programme, will compere this year’s awards.
