Sports retailer Decathlon is making a £15 million investment in a new 50,000 sq ft store in Wednesbury, which will employ around 100 people.

Decathlon will relocate its current Merry Hill operation to the new premises, near junction nine of the M6, offering the 50 existing employees the opportunity to relocate.

The store will stock clothing and equipment for more 70 sports and leisure activities including football, rugby, cricket, camping, angling, cycling, walking and tennis – with a total range of over 170,000 items.

Anthony Kirkwood has been appointed manager of the store, having previously run the Decathlon store in Stockport.

He said: ‘I am very excited about the new store and can’t wait to open.

“The contractors are currently finishing off the building work, and also installing outside areas for football, badminton, basketball and table tennis.

“It really will be a store with a difference and offer something for everyone,” he added.

The company has already begun recruiting for the positions.

Decathlon is based in Lille, France, and has more than 500 stores worldwide.
