The Beatles were in full cry with Help and Yesterday; Julie Andrews was packing in audiences for the Sound of Music and hippy 'flower power' was at its height in California the year that Hadley Group set up operations.
And the West Midland cold roll forming steel company has celebrated its 40th anniversary with a year of record results.
In contrast with many other manufacturers in the region, Hadley has overcome strong overseas competition and erratic raw material costs to win through.
'For a company of our size, with a turnover approaching # 90 million, to remain both fully independent and achieve a record year in the face of such worldwide commercial pressures is a truly outstanding achievement,' said managing director Phil Hadley.
When the company started in 1965 it was capitalised at just #150 and began operations in the front room of a house. Today, the Hadley Group has 475 employees and occupies more than 480,000 sq ft of production and office space at three sites in Smethwick and West Bromwich. It rolled more than 100,000 tonnes of steel in the last 12 months.
In addition to a bespoke section rolling service, the company has also developed a range of products marketed nationwide and internationally, mainly for the construction industry although it does have customers in the automotive, aerospace and agricultural industries.
The group exports to 50 countries in five continents and also has its own manufacturing facilities in Thailand, Dubai and Germany plus a sales operation just outside Paris which covers most of continental Europe.
Mr Hadley and his co-executives are firm believers in continuous improvement at every level of operation, from first contact with customers through to design, quality and manufacturing and delivery and after sales service.
A determination to be self-reliant has helped it through some times, Mr Hadley said.
Instead of depending on external resources for equipment and tooling, the group has always designed, built and maintained its own machines, plant and equipment and has resisted outsourcing.
Hadley has maintained its 40-year-long commitment to investment, currently running at record levels.
Mr Hadley said this has enabled the group to lead the roll-forming industry in computer aided design and manufacture. The next stage of productive software is helping designers to work even more closely with potential customers by evaluating cold-rolled section designs on-screen
