One of Birmingham's oldest golf courses is trying to take a slice of the corporate market after securing two of this summer’s biggest golf days.

Harborne Golf Club, which currently has 600 members, will host Land Rover’s golf day this year as well as an event for the NSPCC which is opening a new centre in Quinton.

General manager Adrian Cooper believes there are opportunities to win more business.

He said: “Corporate golf days have been relatively quiet for everyone in recent years for obvious reasons but they are certainly coming back and we are pleased to have such major events here at the club this summer.”

Mr Cooper, who took over the running of the club five years ago, said his role had been not only to grow membership but also to diversify income streams for the 115-year-old club with corporate golf days part of that strategy.

“Harborne was a very traditional club when I arrived with old school values but it has been important to bring it into the 21st century.

“You certainly aren’t going to see members in jeans and flip-flops but you don’t have to wear a jacket and tie and we don’t have a men only bar any more.

“In terms of the business, obviously we have a fantastic golf course but we also do christenings and weddings and the like and have a packed social calendar and initiatives through the week.

"The club really does have a great social side which is attractive to married couples as one can play golf while the other does something else at the club.”

Mr Cooper said the club was looking for up to 50 new members – be they playing or social – with full membership costing just over £1,000 but with no joining fee.

He said this makes it one of the most competitively-priced private clubs in the city.

He said: “If you use the membership then it’s cheap golf - if you don’t then it’s the most expensive golf in the world. This is certainly a wealthy area but we have a diverse membership.

“Years ago it was just Birmingham’s lawyers and bankers who were members but now we have them as well as builders and milkmen, you name it. It certainly isn’t a snooty club.”

* Harborne Golf Club will host the start of the Birmingham Post Invitational Challenge which will see leading members of the city’s business community play a four-ball on the course each week with a league published in the newspaper and online.

A trophy will be presented to the winning pair at the end of the summer.
