Children at St Michaels Primary School in Handsworth have enjoyed a reading session with Grant Thornton volunteers.

The event took place as part of World Book Day celebrations, organised through Business in the Community’s Read to Succeed Campaign.

The team of 19 reading volunteers from Grant Thornton took it in turns to visit the school regularly to read one to one or in small groups with year five pupils.

The scheme aims to promote a love of reading in young people and to encourage high literacy levels in the next generation.

Patricia Wick, headteacher at St Michael’s Junior and Infant School, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Grant Thornton volunteers to St Michaels and we’re very much looking forward to a productive relationship.”

Other Birmingham firms which took part in Read to Succeed included Squire Sanders Hammonds, Beachcroft, Pinsent Masons, Morrisons Facilities, ACAS West Midlands, AON Hewitt and TD Waterhouse.
