Journalism's going to the dogs - to boost funds for charity.

The Newspaper Press Fund's West Midlands District is holding it's annual greyhound night at Hall Green Stadium on Saturday.

Last year the event raised more than £3,000 with the cash going to help journalists in need.

District chairman Gerry Armes said: "This will be the 27th consecutive year of this event, which makes it the longest running charity greyhound event in the UK.

"Once again it is a sell out, with all tickets taken in all 14 sponsored races.

"The event has grown from just nine races in 1978, to the present 14 races."

A range of organisations, including the Post and Mail, sponsor the races, and hospitality box tickets have been sold at £28 a head.

* Former BBC and ITV political correspondent John Sergeant has been named as guest speaker for charity's 2006 lunch, on St Patrick's Day, March 17.

The 2005 lunch raised £18,000.

More details will be released nearer the time.
