Sir Roy Gardner, chief executive of Centrica, took home almost £2 million in pay and shares last year at a time when millions of his customers faced record increases in their gas bills.

The group's annual report and accounts also shows that the value of the 59-year-old's pension pot jumped to £6.1 million - up by £2.2 million - after Centrica increased the pension accrual rates for executive directors to take account of a new, lower retirement age of 62, which was 65 previously.
