A West Midlands winner of the Deal of The Year 2007 has been chosen by a panel of professionals who assessed a series of competing transactions with values of £10 million or above.

The award, launched in 1997, is jointly organised by The Birmingham Post and Birmingham Forward and sponsored by Deloitte.

It recognises the businessmen and professionals involved in successful completions.

The overall winner and runners-up, chosen from a shortlist, will be announced at a special event in the Patrick Centre at Birmingham Hippodrome on April 8. It will be preceded by the AGM of Birmingham Forward.

Industrialist David Grove, chairman of the selection committee, said: "The deals represent what I regard as the real proven worth of private equity which comes in bank management teams as opposed to the private equity transactions where billions of pounds are based on financial engineering and massive financial fees.

"Companies which no longer fit in a group are taken out and go to management teams to grow them." Mr Grove said: "We live in the real world instead of the esoteric world of Monaco where some of the money comes from.

"Despite this there are a lot of deals done in the West Midlands with private equity capital with real money going to real businesses."

Richard Edwards, practice senior partner at Deloitte in Birmingham, said the Deal of The Year demonstrated the wealth of professional talent in the region and the variety of merger and acquisition private equity deals which were carried through.
