Investment management, tax and business services group Smith & Williamson has acquired the trade and assets of BTG Tax.

Smith & Williamson, which has an office in Colmore Row, has completed a deal for the tax operation which is a member of Begbies Traynor Group. As a result, the 35-strong BTG Tax team, currently located in Edgbaston, will become part of Smith & Williamson.

The team transferring from BTG Tax to Smith & Williamson comprises private client, corporate tax, VAT and tax investigations specialists which includes eight partners and directors.

They are BTG’s managing partner Birmingham, John Hodgson; corporate tax partners, Ray Abercromby, Kari Campbell and Robert King; Gareth Short who is a tax partner specialising in the sports, media and entertainment sector; tax investigations partner, Jeff Millington; VAT director, Tony Jackson; and private tax director, Carol Whitehouse.

Smith & Williamson’s investment management business has over £11.5 billion funds under management and advice, making it one of the largest private client investment managers in the UK.

Smith & Williamson will have an annual fee income of £180 million and employ almost 300 tax professionals across all offices and generate income of about £40 million from its tax business.
