The profession’s qualifications body, ACCA Qualification, said more than 6,000 students successfully completed examinations in December 2008 with 182,449 taking 365,528 papers. This was compared with 164,646 taking 335,566 papers in June 2008.

The results showed that 6,447 students successfully completed finals to become ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) affiliates. There was also an improvement in pass rates at the professional level, which led to an overall increase in affiliates of 4.4 per cent, compared to June 2008.

Clare Minchington, ACCA’s executive director for learning and customer service, said: “This is the third sitting of ACCA’s new qualification, which was first examined in December 2007. The exams were well received by candidates, employers and tuition providers.

“By working closely with our partners and tuition providers, we are working to ensure that students have a global education to enable them to be tomorrow’s business leaders in a challenging global environment. Our ‘Train the Trainer’ initiative, where we share best practice with those who teach accounting to ACCA students around the world, has helped students to reach for success.”

ACCA, the global body for professional accountants, has 325,606 students and 122,426 members in 170 countries.

The group recently launched a new microsite to give members the opportunity to share experiences and access support on dealing with the current economic situation. The microsite brings together analysis, resources, business strategy ideas and discussion boards giving members an opportunity to gain insight and share ideas.
