A Malvern company, which exports state-of-the-art water technology, has won an engineering award for a product it launched eight months earlier.

Pulsar Process Measurement, of Enigma Commercial Centre, Sandys Road, won the iDEA (Innovation and Design Excellence) award in the Design Cycle Time Reduction category.

The company designs and manufactures ultrasonic level and flow measurement equipment, mainly for the water industry.

Water companies are required to record how many times they release waste water. The Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO) structures that manage overflows are usually in remote areas without a mains electricity supply, and an overflow event might not occur for months.

Pulsar won the iDEA award for developing a battery powered CSO monitoring unit, called the Blackbox CSO Controller, that automatically hibernates, periodically wakes up very quickly to record a measurement, and then goes to “sleep”.

If the sewage level is rising, the device wakes more and more often until it has recorded an overflow and its duration.

Sales and marketing director Keith Flint said: “We are delighted to win the iDEA award for the Blackbox CSO, and are exporting it. There has already been a great deal of interest.”

The company has worked in tandem with UK Trade & Investment for around nine years and exports to dozens of countries, including Australia, Germany, Italy and the US.

“We regularly use the Overseas Market Introduction Service, which provides us with valuable intelligence on the markets concerned.

“Our international trade adviser, Linda Smith, has also helped us by providing excellent mentoring, which ultimately led to us finding a distributor in Spain,” said Mr Flint.

Established in 1997, Pulsar Process Measurement has 36 employees, and about 55 per cent of its £5.2 million annual turnover is export business.
