A new insurance policy has been launched to take some of the worry out of travelling abroad with young children.
The company behind the scheme, Tinytotsaway, says it has been designed to give maximum protection to families on the move.
Costing from £48.82 for a family, the company says the policy is “perfect for the credit crunch as children are covered for free and there are no policy excesses on claims for children’s illness or injury”.
The multi-trip annual travel insurance policies come with two levels of cover – standard or premier – and can cover European or worldwide destinations. All policies include 17 days of cover for winter sports, both on and off piste.
The policies provide flexibility for single-parent families and also allow the option of adding grandparents, au pairs or nannies to the same policy for a small additional fee, yet still allows independent travel for each adult covered.
Families can access a 24-hour medical emergency advice line with English-speaking doctors should they or their child become ill while in a foreign country. The help line will also direct them to the nearest hospital with paediatric facilities anywhere in the world.
Other family-specific benefits include additional cover to hire a replacement buggy if theirs is damaged in transit, special terms for disabled children and a free booklet offering advice on what to take, tips on flying with babies, how to get an EHIC card and how it can be used.
“Travel insurance is notoriously obscure in its terms and conditions with the result that many families are misinformed about what they need,” said Sandra Smith, founder of Tinytotsaway.
“Some people even travel without any cover at all in the mistaken belief that the British Government will somehow cover these costs.
