The Birmingham office of business and finance adviser Grant Thornton has expanded its employer solutions team with the appointment of Mick Verney as senior manager.
Mr Verney joins Grant Thornton after almost 17 years at KPMG in Nottingham, ten of which were spent specialising in employment tax in the education sector.
In this role Mr Verney developed policies and practices to help clients manage their employer compliance and governance.
Prior to moving into private practice, Mr Verney spent more than 24 years with HM Revenue & Customs in Nottingham and Derby, where he was an employment tax compliance officer.
Mr Verney said: “With HMRC’s ever-sharpening focus on tax avoidance and the expectation that businesses take responsibility for their governance and control processes, it is vital we help our clients to ensure their systems are transparent and robust, particularly in the face of a constantly changing compliance landscape.”
James Hemphill, head of Grant Thornton’s employer solutions team in Birmingham, said: “Recruitment and retention of talented people is a top priority for businesses across the region at the moment, as skills shortages are having an effect across a range of sectors.
“As a result they are looking at offering wider choices of benefits which are tax efficient for their organisations and employees as well as being fully tax compliant.”
David Hillan, head of corporate tax at Grant Thornton in Birmingham, added: “Mick is incredibly well-known in the specialist field of employment taxation and I know our clients will benefit greatly from his unique blend of experience and high level of technical skills. He is a great asset to our local and national employer solutions teams.”
