The Bank of England has cut interest rates by 1.5 per cent to a new level of 3 per cent.
The move took the City by surprise as analysts had, at best, expected a one point cut.
It is hoped that this cut will see banks lending more freely and restore consumer confidence in time for Christmas. It could also give a real boost to the flagging equity markets.
