Mark Ball, a director of Fierce Earth, is the winner of the Institute of Directors' Young Director of the Year award.

It was presented by Yo! Sushi founder Simon Woodroffe at a gala event at the NEC, Birmingham, last night.

Sponsored by Lloyds TSB Corporate and Business Link Birmingham, the event, in its second year, expanded this year to cover both the East and West Midlands region.

Fierce Earth organises the annual Fierce! festival in Birmingham which has been running for seven years. It is a media company dealing with special cultural events and film production.

He was category winner in the Small Business section, beating stiff competition from Nick Morgan, director of the Big Cat Group and Stephen Clarke, managing director of Truancy Call.

Finalists in the mediumsized business category were Brett Isenberg, chief executive officer of Mailcom, Jason Giller, managing director of Veritas IT, and category winner Andrew Bridgen, managing director of AB Produce.

Stuart Laight, MD of Aspray Transport, was the category winner in the Large Business section.

Accountants KPMG sponsored the Enterprising Young Person of the Year award and this was won by Hannah O'Rourke and Lucy Anne Salkeld from St Paul's School for Girls, Edgbaston.
