A Cannock-based haulage firm is celebrating a triple whammy of success following a drive to expand the business.

S Winfield in Hawks Green, has set up a new MOT centre for cars and light commercial vehicles, started a car maintenance training scheme for women drivers, and is launching a service to help other hauliers to monitor and reduce fuel consumption.

The company was set up by husband and wife team Jenni and Sidney Winfield in 1969. Today, the £1.25 million turnover business is run by their son Warren and his wife Alison.

The core of the business is the transportation of large industrial items for the construction and engineering industries, and for several power stations. The recent investment totalling £460,000 has included a move to new premises and the addition of nine new trucks.

"We started out by putting a couple of our drivers on an economical driving course to hone their driving techniques, and to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear," said Mr Winfield.

"Then we trained the rest of our team and saw the potential to develop this into a benchmarking tool which similar firms could use."
