An engineering design manager made redundant by Rolls-Royce after 20 years service has started his own business.
Jim Oswald is now running Oswald Consultancy, which provides technical and management support to the power generation industry, two years after leaving the aerospace group.
The former advanced engineering manager for Rolls' energy business took voluntary redundancy after its research and development team was moved to Canada.
Mr Oswald spent three months planning his next move before hearing about Vision Works, the business start-up programme run by Coventry University Enterprises staff.
He said: "The time immediately after leaving Rolls was the scariest of my life. I had 20 years of definitely getting a pay cheque then months with nothing.
"Joining Vision Works was the best move I've ever made. Being around other people in the same boat, and talking through the challenges we faced, helped me get my business up and running."
The company has now set up home at Coventry University's Technology Park.
"There are so many like-minded businesses here and it's great for networking," Mr Oswald said.
"Recently I got talking to another tenant and in weeks we had secured an order for £8,000. I've also commissioned another company to work with us and given them an order worth £5,000."
