Supermodel Elle Macpherson was yesterday named as an executive director of the surfwear retailer and stock market minnow Hot Tuna.

The London-listed Australian company will grant her shares worth almost £1 million and further share options which could peak at £1.5 million. Australian-born Ms Macpherson, who has modelled swimwear for Hot Tuna, will advise the firm on product development, its brand and sales strategy.

She said: "I believe this to be a maverick and dynamic union. Hot Tuna is a brand with Australian heritage, irreverent and edgy."

The supermodel has a reputation as a shrewd businesswoman and her lingerie and swimwear brand Intimates is estimated to generate sales of £39 million a year.

Macpherson has signed a two year contract with the company, which was set up in 1969 and floated on London's Alternative Investment Market in September. It is valued at around £19 million.

She will not work full time at the firm, but will attend board meetings.

Ms Macpherson's package involves two million shares - which at Friday's closing price of 40p are worth £800,000 - and a further two million share options valued between 50p and 75p - or £1 million to £1.5 million.
