Manufacturers will have a chance to learn about a new law which could force them to pay for the whole disposal process of their products.

An August deadline has been set for the implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE).

Under WEEE, companies that manufacture, sell, distribute or recycle electrical and electronic equipment will become responsible for financing the whole disposal process.

The purpose of the directive is to protect health and the environment by restricting hazardous substances in new equipment such as household appliances, IT equipment, electrical and electronic tools, toys and sports products, medical devices and automatic dispensers.

The European Information Centre will be unravelling the directive on March 9.
