Chris Tarrant is set to make a return to the airwaves with a sponsored Saturday morning network show on 105.7 Smooth Radio.
Tarrant’s first permanent show since leaving Capital Radio in 2004 will launch on July 26 from 10am until 1pm and will be networked across eight of GMG Radio Group’s stations, including Smooth in the West Midlands.
Tarrant, a University of Birmingham alumnus, said: “I have had a really long holiday from radio, but it is a fantastic medium that I have always loved, so I am delighted to be getting back onto the airwaves, and mercifully I won’t have to get up at 5am to do it.”
GMG Radio group programme director John Simons said: “We are delighted to have persuaded arguably commercial radio’s most successful broadcaster ever back behind the mic. Chris Tarrant is the perfect presenter to be pitted against Jonathan Ross on Saturday mornings and we have no doubt he’ll attract both the listeners that loved him before and a strong new audience to tune in.”
The £1 million 12-month sponsorship deal with Nissan Micra, created by Manning Gottlieb OMD and Brian Commins, managing director of commercial radio consultancy Pure Radio and former S&P Director of Virgin Radio, will enable the company to promote its Nissan Micra brand of car to millions of listeners. The deal also includes tactical on-air promotions throughout the year.
Andy Connell, marketing communications manager of Nissan said: “It’s great to be sponsoring Chris’ much anticipated return to the airwaves after his long break. The Nissan Micra will offer the show a series of exciting promotions including car giveaways and bespoke features to engage the audience, bringing a fresh, new approach to commercial radio whilst linking with the lifestyle of the Micra driver.”
