Media regulator Ofcom said urgent action is needed to ensure the BBC does not become the only supplier of national and regional broadcast news.
Chief executive Ed Richards said the current system has become unsustainable and wants independently-funded news consortia to be created as a long-term replacement to ITV regional news. He said that failure to take action would be a “historic missed opportunity”.
