The new managing director of the Birmingham Post and Mail will be John Griffith, publisher Trinity Mirror announced today.

Mr Griffith, a former editor of the Liverpool Echo, will take over from interim managing director Steve Brown. Both had been part of an interim management team which has been running the business for the past five months, with Mr Griffith leading the company's plans to move to Fort Dunlop in the summer.

Mr Brown's own role has been expanded to become Regional Managing Director of Trinity Mirror's North East and Midlands regions, and Mr Griffith will report to him.

The company also announced the appointment of Debbie Davies as managing director of Coventry Newspapers, which publishes the Coventry Telegraph.

Georgina Harvey, Trinity's managing director - regionals, said: "During this period I have been delighted with the progress and pace shown by the interim team.

"I have therefore concluded that the best outcome for both the Midlands and the North-East, and the Group as a whole, is to make this arrangement permanent."

Mr Brown said:  "These appointments give a sense of continuity for the Midlands and I'm delighted that we have two experienced and well known newspaper executives taking on these really significant jobs."
