A Midland car designer who has been involved in some of the most memorable production and concept cars of recent years has turned his talents to producing stunning automotive images.

Andrew Hill, who has worked on cars such as the Lotus Elise Mk1, has diversified away from car design and is indulging his passion to create unique and bold work which captures cars from the classics of the 60s to today’s performance icons.

Mr Hill uses illustration techniques developed in the automotive industry to create powerful, almost abstract finished artwork in strong colours. The images are then printed on block mount, high quality canvas wraps or Acrylic panels in a range of sizes and individually signed.

Mr Hill is still working as a freelance car designer while he focuses on developing new artwork for his new business, called Automotive Images.

He said: “I have always loved drawing and designing cars and this is an extension to my work.”

Early in his career he was responsible for the interior of the Isuzu VehiCross concept and during his period at Lotus Cars he had a leading role in the design for the Lotus Elise Mk1 and the concept design for Elise V6 coupe that later became the Lotus Exige. This was followed by a two-year secondment to Proton Cars Malaysia as the head of design.

Returning to the UK in 2000 he worked freelance for a number of companies before becoming head of design at the automotive consultancy UltraMotive from June 2004 to September 2008.

Mr Hill has always sketched and painted a variety of subjects from local landscapes to the literally hundreds of sketches and finished presentation drawings of vehicle interiors and exteriors completed during his career as a professional automotive designer.

Over the last five years Mr Hill has been developing these images, combining his passion for art with the latest digital techniques being used within the industry to create this new visual style for his automotive art.

He works by sketching or painting an initial image based on hand sketches, photos and reference material gathered from motor shows and classic car events. This is then imported into the latest graphics programmes and further developed into the final images.
