EnterprisegalleryPictures: Verity Milligan's favourite photos of Birmingham - in her own wordsBookmarkShareEnterpriseByTamlyn JonesBusiness Reporter17:27, 25 MAR 2015Updated16:25, 1 APR 2015Selfridges at Sunrise - Probably my most famous image and now highly commended in the British Life Photography Awards. I'm obsessive about the weather and get excited at the prospect of fog. The weather conditions on this morning were perfect, enough fog for the sun to bounce off and create an epic sunrise (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)1 of 13New Street Development at Dusk - I've seen Birmingham go through lots of regeneration. When I first started coming here, Bullring was being built and New Street is the latest. This was taken from the top of the Rotunda and, like many of my shots, it was taken during the transition between day and night or vice-versa. The sky's colour adds extra drama but my favourite thing is the red and green glow from the platform lights (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)2 of 13Grand Union Morning - I'm a big fan of Birmingham's canals and I discovered this stretch of canal in Acocks Green when I started making friends in the city. This particular morning was very atmospheric, with the morning light streaming through sparse, winter foliage. If only a canal boat had meandered down (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)3 of 13Digbeth at Dusk - This was an off-the-cuff moment soon after I moved to Birmingham. Walking up from the Custard Factory, the blue hour was descending over the city, yet there still a hint of sunset on the horizon, illuminating the Rotunda. It was a transitional moment, a metaphor that stood for me, the city and the sky all at once (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)4 of 13The City Moves in Mono - Another facet of Birmingham is the juxtaposition in architecture. Some find it irritating but I find it rather endearing. St Martin in the Bull Ring stands in the heart of the centre, traffic rushing around, always busy. This long exposure gives the sense of movement and the contrasting serenity. I used to work in the local history section of Central Library and found some of my ancestors were christened in this church giving it a personal connection (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)5 of 13Fog in the Lickeys - Birmingham has many areas of natural beauty including Lickey Hills. This was taken on a foggy, autumnal day, the kind when I didn't want to put my camera down. Everywhere I looked, the forest appeared atmospheric. I'm so proud there are places like this to explore in Birmingham, a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)6 of 13Juxtapositions - This is a rarely seen view, shooting back from the Jewellery Quarter to the city with St Paul's Church dwarfed by the surrounding cityscape. I'm continuously on the hunt for different scenes and new angles and the quarter has many an opportunity (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)7 of 13Cherry Blossom in Brindleyplace - Unexpected pockets of beauty exist in every season. This was taken in Brindleyplace during spring when the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. This is a long exposure so there's movement in the sky and the architecture of Ikon Gallery makes for a great juxtaposition to the pink of the blossom (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)8 of 13The Old and the New - Soon to be a sight gone forever, the old Central Library and the new Library of Birmingham stand side by side. Forty years apart, the architectural world has moved on. I have a special place in my heart for this image, it's great to see them existing together, even if only for a little while longer (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)9 of 13Fox Hollies Fog - I live in Acocks Green, not the trendiest area of Birmingham but one I'm rather fond of. This is the first home I've owned and it backs onto Fox Hollies Park. At night, I can often hear Tawny Owls and Foxes and in the mornings it's quiet bar the odd dog walker. There's this old crooked tree I love. This was taken on one of those rare fog and sunshine combination days, with mist isolating the tree from the urban background of Gospel Lane (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)10 of 13Gas Street Basin - I rarely shoot during the day. Mostly the light is too harsh and I like to stick to the golden hours after sunrise and just before sunset. However, the blue of the sky was reflecting in the water, making an endearing reflection. Framing it with The Cube added context and a sense of serenity in an urban scene (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)11 of 13Sutton Mornings - Sutton Park is huge - there's so much to explore and there are even Exmoor ponies roaming through the foliage. This was taken on a January morning with the light streaming through the trees. Even early, families and runners were out enjoying to winter sunshine. It's a snapshot of weekend life in the city (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)12 of 13Blade Runner Birmingham - Christmas lights up the city centre and brings in people from all over the country to experience the wares of the Christmas Market. It's a great time for photographers, with plenty of opportunity to capture the frivolity. Shooting from the bottom of the Bullring towards New Street, there is a real sense of metropolis, and it reminds me of Blade Runner with the futuristic buildings rising from the concrete (Image: Pic: Verity Milligan)13 of 13
